Closed Circuit Television Helps Small Business Guard Against Internal and External Loss
Small businesses suffer heavily from employee theft and shoplifters. And, according to the University of Florida's 1998 National Retail Survey, employee theft is the highest it's been in seven years, with shoplifting a close second. In an effort to learn more about how small businesses can better protect their assets, we sat down with Genext's Drew Zabrocki to learn about the benefits closed circuit televisions can have on a business owner's bottom line.

Are Cameras economically feasible for small shops?
Absolutely. Closed circuit television (CCTV) can be economically feasible to businesses of all types and sizes. Small companies carry many of the same needs and concerns as larger businesses. CCTV (observation systems) can help in addressing an array of these concerns in small business, including vandalism, shoplifting, robbery, assault, employee theft and vendor theft. Although a smaller company's loss from these areas may be substantially less than a larger company, those dollars can quickly add up.
For example, the average loss of a store less than 40,000 square feet was $224,808 (2.32 percent), while superstores listed an average loss of $442,848 (2.24 percent), according to the 11th Supermarket Shrink Study by the National Supermarket Research Group of Scottsdale, AZ.
The installation of an observation system for a small business can range in cost based on many factors, such as size of the camera system, accessories, and which pricing option the business chooses to lease*. Genext offers various methods for small businesses to financially afford the installation of an observation system, such as having a Genext-owned system installed, outright purchases, and leasing options from third-party companies.
A Genext-owned system allows a business to install an observation system at a reduced cost and requires a monthly service agreement. The system prices start as low as $300 for installation and $20 per month for service. The second option, leasing, offers small businesses the alternative to install an observation system without any out-of-pocket expense and only a monthly investment. Leases can also be designed for an outright purchase of the system at the end of the term. The business owner also has a third option to purchase the camera system outright at the time of sale. Observation systems can start at a few hundred dollars and can increase to the thousands. Total cost depends on that business' needs, budget and choice of purchase plan.
The benefits gained by installing an observation system can quickly justify the system's cost. For example, let's say a small business believes they are losing just $20 a day during normal business hours. The company is open 6 days a week, or 24 days a month. That equals $480 a month, or $5,800 a year in losses. An observation system can help reduce this loss, financially justify the investment and increase long-term net profit.
What are some other applications of CCTV Systems?
There are five motivators in which most camera purchases can be categorized, including security, liability, service, operations, and marketing. The reason for purchasing closed circuit television can vary from business to business-based on individual needs. Certainly, security encompasses one of the larger areas that can address business and employee safety issues such as vandalism, burglary, robbery, and assault. Security can also be deemed to include cash, merchandise, and inventory shrinkage in areas such as employee theft, shoplifting and vendor theft. However, the motivation for investing in an observation system continues to grow.
Business liability is another choice for companies. CCTV can help to address potential "slip and fall" customer claims, as well as potential fraudulent worker's compensation issues. Liability protection can also range from a small medical center that monitors physical therapy to a day care center that views daily activity.
Customer service is another area. Many small businesses monitor employees for customer service handling, training, and even how long a customer stands in a checkout line.
Operational issues can be another motivator in purchasing CCTV. Employees can be monitored for work efficiency, and current business procedures can be studied and evaluated. Technology now even offers remote monitoring, which can optimize a business owner's time by viewing multiple sites from a remote location like the office or home. The small business owner can optimize time and efficiency by accessing and viewing the business cameras from his/her home computer.
Marketing is another option that is in the early stages but will continue to increase as technology and price become more and more attractive. Business owners are beginning to utilize their camera system to promote their business via the Internet. For example, potential customers could access a restaurant's Web site and view the location for ambiance, service, etc.
What kinds of success do storeowners have in preventing theft or vandalism when these cameras are in place, and how successful are they in proving who committed a crime?
Like any form of security, the presence of an observation system can help in deterring theft or vandalism. Clearly visible window decals referencing the use of closed circuit television, installed cameras and monitors visible to the public all act as deterrents.

Video Surveillance
A video surveillance system, where video is being monitored and/or recorded, is a strong deterrent to potential burglars. In the event of an actual burglary, recorded video provides critical information required for investigation and follow-up. | Email Us
Intrusion Detection
An intrusion detection and control system detects when an intruder has either gotten inside your facility or is attempting a break-in. The system can be comprised of numerous components based on your specific building requirements. Below are some intrusion detection components that specifically target burglary risk. | Email Us
