Yakima County, the core of the Yakima Valley, extends from the summits of the Cascade Mountain Range to within a few dozen miles of the Columbia River, presenting an unbelievable range of environmental conditions. Between the western and eastern ends of the county, there is a shift to very dry conditions typical of the Columbia Basin in Eastern Washington. Yakima, the county seat, is the largest city on the east slope. The earlier principal point, also called Yakima, later became Union Gap. Other key communities include Sunnyside and Toppenish, headquarters for the Yakima Indian Nation.
